Dutch tourist rescued near Trollstigen

Norwegian search and rescue crews found a 60-year-old man from the Netherlands alive and relatively uninjured during the weekend, more than two days after he’d gone missing in the mountains of Romsdal near Trollstigen. Search conditions were difficult because of heavy fog and poor weather, and they’d had to suspend their efforts on Saturday morning.

The man had gone off hiking with his wife and daughter on Thursday, on a trek up to the top of Stabbeskaret, known for being challenging. The two women opted to turn around just before reaching the summit but he chose to continue despite weather forecasts of heavy rain and lightning. His family reported him missing when he didn’t return by Thursday night.

The more than 30 people and emergency helicopter out searching for him finally found him on Saturday afternoon at an elevation of around 1,050 meters. He was reported as being cold and showing signs of having been outdoors for more than two full days in wet weather, but otherwise uninjured. Police said he was sent to a hospital at Hjelset in Molde for a health check. “We’re all very grateful we found him alive,” operations leader Geir Helge Ådneram told state broadcaster NRK.
