Warmest December night ever

Norway’s state Meteorological Institute has registered its highest temperature reading ever for a December night in the capital. Thermometers at its headquarters at Blindern in Oslo showed 6.9C (45F) during the night between Sunday and Monday.

That’s the mildest December night since registration began in 1937, reported the institute on Tuesday. Climate researcher Jostein Mamen reported that the former record for the highest December reading in Oslo was 6.7C in December 2015.

Norway’s Climate Service Center further reported that average temperatures in the southeastern region of the country have risen by 1.1 degrees from the period 1961-1990 to the period from 1991 to 2020.

Prospects for a white Christmas this year are dim in many areas of Southern Norway. Ski resorts in the mountains are also worried about the lack of snow and colder temperatures during the upcoming holiday period.
