Viewer statistics seemed almost as high as the subject of the series they were watching: Huge trolls rising out of the rocky mountains of central Norway. The Norwegian film Troll 2 topped Netflix in 59 countries during December as the most-watched non-English film.
News bureau NTB has reported that the second film about trolls in Norway was most-watched in countries ranging from Argentina and South Africa to Thailand, France and Norway itself. Many Norwegians could recognize and identify with the scenic locations where the film was shot on location, not least in the final dramatic scenes in Trondheim.
The first Troll film released in 2022 has also seen a rush of new viewers, landing in second place for the most-watched non-English films on Netflix, with 5.3 million viewings.
“It’s fantastic to see how our Norwegian film has spread over the whole world,” said Troll 2 director Roar Uthaug. “It’s fun to see how our trolls can create so much enthusiasm.”
