Neighbours baffled after shooting drama

Residents of Hordvik near Bergen were stunned and confused on Thursday after one of their neighbours suddenly started shooting at apparently random targets from his home on Wednesday morning. The shooting set off an all-day stand-off with police that ended when he was forced out with tear gas that also set his home on fire.

The drama prompted police to order residents to remain indoors and away from windows, while children were kept inside the local school. National assistance was called in as well, including a professional negotiator. After nearly 13 hours, he was finally taken into custody and charged with making serious threats with loaded weapons.

The man, in his 40s, has lived in the area all his life and had no earlier police record. Neighbours described him as “a normal guy with a normal job” who seemed relaxed and kind if somewhat introverted, often going fishing and hunting. He was also a member of a local rifle club.

No one was physically injured during the long day during which he fired dozens of shots at neighbouring homes and police cars. He was due to undergo checks of his physical and mental health following his arrest.
