An appeals court in Oslo has ordered that Marius Borg Høiby must remain in police custody until a verdict is reached on the 39 criminal charges against him. Høiby wanted to be released, but the court pointed to his record as a repeat offender.
Høiby, son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, had been re-arrested on the eve of his seven-week trial after he’d once again threatened an earlier girlfriend. He appealed his custody order on that offense and lost in the Oslo County Court, now again at the appeals court level.
The appeals court ruling noted how Høiby had violated earlier restraining orders meant to keep him from harassing former partners viewed as victims in the main case against him. The judges determined there was danger he’d commit new crimes “especially violations of restraining orders, threats and violence” against earlier alleged victims.
The appeals court judges also rejected Høiby’s claims that he was “motivated” to receive professional help outside prison that would reduce the danger of repeat offenses. They further noted that the 29-year-old Høiby has no job, no one needing his support and no other “obligations” that would suffer from his incarceration until a verdict in the main case against him is reached in late May or early June.
