An earthquake monitoring station at the University of Bergen (UiB) reacted during Norway’s first victorious match in the World Cup last week, and again during Norway’s second match on Tuesday. Celebrations were so intense that three small earthquakes were recorded, reports UiB’s Department of Earth Science.
The university’s seismometer is located in the basement of the Science Building in central Bergen. UiB issued a press release this week noting that “a particularly clear signal was observed when (Norwegian football superstar) Erling Haaland scored” against Iraq on June 17.
More seismic activity was recorded during Norway’s second match against Senegal, which played out in the early morning hours of June 23. It was also victorious and “noticeable signals” during the match coincided with Norway’s three goals.
The seismic signals can be generated either by people moving in synchrony or by sound, according to the scientists, who suggested that those occurring during the football matches show “that Bergen is a vibrant city with a lot of energy.”
