The Norwegian women’s national football team won its opening match against Switzerland at the European Championships in Basel. That got the team off to a flying start, led by captain Ada Hegerberger.
It was a remarkable difference from Hegerberger’s last participation in a Euro championship, when she was highly critical of the national team’s management and declined further championship play. She still plays professionally for Lyon and returned to the national team when its management improved.
Neither Hegerberger nor coach Gemma Grainger were happy with Norway’s first-half performance Wednesday evening, though, when they trailed 1-0, but then Hegerberger herself scored and Switzerland’s Julia Stierli mistakenly kicked the ball into her own goal on a pass to Hegerberger from Caroline Graham Hansen.
Grainger had been tough in her half-time criticism, and the team bounced back with its 2-1 victory over Switzerland. The Norwegians now lead their group, which also includes Finland and Iceland. Norway will be back in action on Sunday evening against Finland, which also won its opening match.
