Reaction has ranged from disbelief to ridicule after Russia called Norway a “dangerous” country this week. It also flatly denied it was behind a recent wave of sabotage in the form of hacking, just as Norwegian intelligence agency PST confirmed it was investigating yet another data attack.
The Russian Embassy in Oslo had sent out an angry response to reports of sabotage last week, branding PST’s links to pro-Russian hackers as “unfriendly actions” that “make Norway a dangerous country for us.” Norway’s largest newspaper Aftenposten was among media scoffing at the Russian response, noting how the hackers themselves have claimed they’re behind sabotage of a dam in the mountains of Southern Norway and, most recently, a similar attack on a company in Eastern Norway.
“One thing is certain:” Aftenposten editorialized on Saturday. “Norway is not a dangerous country for Russia, but Russia is a dangerous country for Norway and the rest of NATO.” PST has confirmed that it’s investigating the latest data attack, noting that it comes in addition to Russia’s “continual and widespread espionage and attempts at influence” in Norway that “raise the probability that Russia’s intelligence agency will try to carry out sabotage actions in Norway.”
