The Norwegian postal service (Posten) has suspended deliveries of most packages to the US, after the Trump Administration removed its customs waiver on those with contents worth less than USD 800 (NOK 8,000). The suspension is linked to the overall uncertainty tied to Trump’s trade war and tariff hikes.
Trump’s new tariffs and waiver removals are due to take effect from August 29. Posten thus halted deliveries to the US and Puerto Rico from August 23, since it was unclear what might happen to a package that arrived in the US a week or more later.
Those sending packages will probably need to pay the new customs duties on them before Posten will send them to the US, but that hasn’t been clarified by US officials nor has any payment system been set up. Posten reported that it’s working with other European postal services in order to clarify the process and what customs officials in the US will eventually demand.
Exceptions can be made, though, for personal packages including gifts if their contents are worth less than NOK 1,000. They’re still subject to existing rules, with packets containing documents also qualifying for exemption.
