Swedish police were holding a 14-year-old Norwegian boy in custody on Tuesday, after pulling him over on the busy E6 motorway near Uddevalla while he was driving a bus. The teenager is believed to have stolen the bus from a garage in Vestby outside Oslo during the night.
Norwegian police had received a call around 4am from the bus company that one of those used for regional transport in the Oslo area was missing. It had a GPS tracking device on board, though, and police told state broadcaster NRK that the bus could thus be traced to an area outside Uddevalla in Sweden, around 170 kilometers south of Vestby.
It was later stopped by Swedish police near Stenungsund between Uddevalla and Gothenburg, with the 14-year-old behind the wheel. He’s since been charged with illegal driving, not least since Norwegians aren’t allowed drivers’ licenses until they’re at least 18.
No one was hurt along the way nor were there any reports of reckless or suspicious driving. Norwegian police were on their way to Sweden to bring him home, where he’d be “followed up” by child protection authorities, according to Norwegian police operations leader Rune Isaksen. He declined to release more information about the boy or his intentions.
