Reported rapes soar in Oslo

The number of reported rapes involving sudden assaults, often outdoors, (overfallsvoldtekter) has nearly doubled in Oslo in the past two years, and police suspect serial rapists may be behind the attacks.

A total of 37 women and two men have filed rape reports so far this year, compared to 24 in all of last year and around 20 in the most recent years before that.

Several of the cases have involved gang rapes, “not necessarily involving several persons who attack, but with several persons contributing to the rape,” Hanne Kristin Rohde of the Oslo Police District told Aftenposten.

Of the 39 rapes reported so far this year, police have only identified the rapist in five cases. One man is in prison, charged with two rapes. “So we have only four assailants under arrest,” said Rohde. She said the same person can be behind multiple rapes.

Police have cautioned women against walking alone late at night, especially if they’ve been drinking. Rohde said police are actively investigating all the rape reports filed.
