Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Martha Louise traveled to Denmark to attend funeral services on Friday for Countess Ruth of Rosenborg, who many viewed as a member of the Norwegian royal family.
The countess was a longtime family friend and relative who spent most Christmas holidays in Norway with her late husband Count Flemming. He was King Harald’s cousin and served as best man when Harald and Sonja married in 1968.
King Harald was not listed among those attending her funeral, however. He has been mostly on summer holiday and out of the public eye since late June, and has been spending the past week sailing in another regatta, this time off the coast of Spain.
The Danish countess died on July 25, at the age of 85. Funeral services were being held at Skovshoved Church in Klampenborg.
