Jobless rate rises among immigrants

Norway continues to have low unemployment compared to the rest of Europe and many other countries in the world, but the jobless rate among immigrants has risen and now is more than triple that for Norway as a whole.

The overall unemployment rate among residents of Norway dipped from 2.4 percent in August of last year to 2.3 percent in the same month this year, according to state statistics bureau SSB.

The unemployment among immigrants living in Norway, however, amounted to 7.9 percent, up from 7.4 percent last year.

Immigration has slowed considerably during 2010, to a growth rate of just 0.5 percent. It remains a challenge, though, for immigrants who haven’t learned Norwegian to find work despite the low national unemployment rate. Immigrant women registered a slightly higher jobless rate than immigrant men.
