Slight rise in support for EU

Norwegians remain firmly opposed to joining the European Union (EU) but a new public opinion poll indicates there’s been a slight increase among those favouring membership.

A recent poll conducted by research firm Sentio for newspapers Nationen and Klassekampen indicates 20.2 percent of Norwegians now want to join the EU. The poll results mark the first time in nearly two years that support for the EU had climbed over the 20 percent mark.

The poll also showed that fully 69.5 percent of Norwegian don’t want to join the EU, although that’s down from earlier polls showing even stronger EU opposition.

The remainder, just over 10 percent of Norwegian voters, were undecided. The poll marked the best showing for the “yes” side since May 2011, when 24 percent favoured joining the EU.
