Oslo police cordoned off the area around the residence of the Egyptian ambassador late Friday afternoon, after a mysterious bag was tossed onto the property on Drammensveien in the capital’s fashionable Frogner district. A bomb squad was called in to examine the bag, which didn’t contain anything dangerous.
It took a few hours before police could confirm that the bag didn’t pose a threat to either the residence or the surrounding neighbourhood. In the meantime, though, police evacuated homes and offices within a few hundred meters of the Egyptian embassy’s property.
“We take it seriously when someone throws a bag into an embassy or residence,” police operations leader Tor Gulbrandsen told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK). Security guards at the Egyptian ambassador’s residence had reported the incident and police continued to investigate who threw the bag.
