Russ season off to a ‘disappointing’ start

A regional president of this year’s “Russ,” the graduating high school students who party hard for several weeks beginning around Easter, said she was “disappointed” that six of her fellow Russ in Sandnes, western Norway, immediately got in trouble for taping a 17-year-old girl to a post in a city park and throwing eggs at her. All six young men have been charged with what amounts to kidnapping.

“This isn’t how Russ should behave,” Christiane Hansen, president of the Sandnes Russ’ board of directors, told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK). “What they did was very stupid. The Russ (all of whom are around 19 years old) should know where to draw the line. I’m disappointed that some of them have started the Russ season with something like this.”

The incident in Sandnes, south of Stavanger, occurred in the city’s Øglendspark on Wednesday night, just before Norway’s five-day Easter holiday period began. After taping the girl to the pole, they threw eggs at her and then took photos of her.

Three of the male Russ (roughy pronounced “roose”) were arrested before midnight and another three were charged on Thursday. They now face jail terms of 45 days.
