Police in Tønsberg said they had arrested a young man “in his late teens” and charged him with the rape of a woman in her 80s on Saturday. The sexual assault occurred on the residential and holiday island of Nøtterøy, just over the bridge from Tønsberg’s city center.
The teenager has refused to acknowledge criminal liability or the facts in the case, “but these are things police can go into more depth with when he undergoes questioning,” a police spokesman told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).
The suspect was first questioned by police as a possible witness in the case, but based on information that surfaced then, police decided to charge him. Prosecutor Lise Dalhaug of the Vestfold Police District said the police were still in an early stage of investigation of the assault, that occurred around 11:30am Saturday after the woman had taken the bus to the Teie area of Nøtterøy, a popular commercial center on the island.
