Another avalanche crashed down on a highway in Northern Norway on Friday, this time on the E8 highway that serves as the main road access route to the city of Tromsø. One truck driver managed to dig a woman out of her car that had overturned.
“There was an incredible amount of snow on the road and traffic just came to a sudden halt,” truck driver Frank Brekmo told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK). “I used parts from my own damaged truck to dig the woman out.”
The avalanche occurred in the Lavangsdalen portion of the E8 south of Tromsø. It’s normally a scenic route north of Nordkjosbotn, but white-out conditions were taking over this week.
The road was cleared for reopening by midday, after authorities determined it was safe to do so, but officials at state agency NVE said the avalanche danger was higher than they thought. Northern Norway has been subjected to tough winter weather in recent weeks and avalanche warnings were posted throughout the counties of Troms, Finnmark and Nordland.
