Kangaroo on Karmøy injured, put to death

A kangaroo that escaped from a zoo on the Norwegian island of Karmøy last week ended up being put to death over the weekend. Veterinarians claimed the kangaroo suffered a foot injury while on the run that couldn’t be mended.

The female kangaroo, which literally hopped out of the Haugaland Zoo during feeing time last Tuesday, eluded her captors for nearly 24 hours despite multiple sightings by startled residents of the large island on Norway’s west coast. She was finally caught late Wednesday night and initially said to be resting comfortably at a local veterinary clinic after her escapades.

Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported Satuday, however, that the kangaroo had suffered several injuries including a serious one to her foot. Veterinarians suspect it was sustained when the kangaroo jumped over fences and came in contact with barbed wire. Infection set in as well.

“We have done all we could, and we have consulted experts on the other side of the globe,” veterinarian Michaela Modig told NRK. The foot injury was the worst, and would have plagued the kangaroo for the rest of her life, according to Modig. That’s why it was decided best to put the kangaroo out of her misery.

“This is terribly sad,” Kjetil Veum Utvik, curator at the zoo, told NRK. “We had hoped we could save her, but everyone agreed that this was best.” Modig said the kangaroo had been stabilized and received pain relievers intravenously until the death sentence was passed .
