Norwegian charged with assault in Spain

A Norwegian man in his 50s has been jailed in Spain since Thursday, charged with sexual assault against a young woman. The man reportedly had traveled as an escort for a group of partying Norwegian high school students called russ.

The so-called russ tours have caused problems in other areas of the Mediterranean, when partying among the soon-to-graduate students gets out of hand. Several students were arrested and charged with violent assaults last summer.

An official for Spain’s Balearic Islands told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) that the man was arrested in the city of Magaluf on Mallorca. He was due to be released on bail but must remain available for questioning by Spanish authorities.

Police in Norway told NRK they had no plans to arrest the man if he returns to Norway, pending further documentation of the charges against him. staff
