Man stabbed on board train

A man in his 30s was attacked by another knife-wielding man late Monday afternoon on board the commuter train that runs between Oslo and Gjøvik. The assailant was quickly arrested with help from security guards.

The stabbing set off what police described as near-panic at the scene. The train was at the station in Oslo just as the afternoon commuter rush was beginning, with the platform full of people when the wounded man was carried off the train by emergency personnel.

Newspaper VG described the man’s stab wounds as serious. No motive was immediately available. VG reported that both men were of foreign background.

Police questioned several witnesses at the scene, and collected evidence. The train departure was cancelled and passengers were transferred to other trains.
