Hopes fade for finding missing woman

After five days of intense searching in the mountains around Ørsta in Sunnmøre, police and rescue crews were losing hopes of finding 25-year-old Maya Justyna Herner alive. The young woman from Poland failed to return from what was supposed to be a short hike last Wednesday.

Search and rescue crews resumed their efforts Sunday morning, but after darkness fell late that afternoon, police reported that “we don’t think it’s possible to find the missing person alive any longer.” Rescue apparatus was reduced.

Herner was last seen in a grocery story in Ørsta around 12:30pm on Wednesday. She then sent messages to friends that she was going on a hike for around two hours. The car she used was found in a parking lot at the Skåla trail head. Data from her mobile phone indicates she had been in the mountains but then left the area with mobile phone coverage.

Nearly 300 people and a police helicopter took part in the search for the Herner, who had moved to Ørsta just a week earlier to work in a cleaning firm.
