Two killed in another avalanche

Two Norwegian men were killed in an avalanche in Nordland County Tuesday afternoon. They were each operating excavators in an effort to open a local road after the winter when the avalanche came crashing down.

The alarm sounded at around noon, and the emergency response was swift with both police, ambulances, volunteers and a SeaKing helicopter sent to the scene at Durmålstinden in Sørfold, northeast of Fauske.

“Emergency personnel were carried into the area and could quickly localize the equipment the men had been operating. The two men were dug out of the snow and declared dead at the scene,” read a press release from the Nordland Police District.

The two men were not immediately identified pending notification of next of kin. Avalanche danger has been high in the area, reported state broadcaster NRK.
