State officials were warning residents of Southern Norway on Wednesday that they must have winter tires on their vehicles by Sunday. That’s when the first snow is expected over much of the southeast.
“Large areas of Østlandet will get the first snow of the autumn on Sunday, and it will keep snowing on Monday,” Geir Ottar Fagerlid of the state meteorologic institute told state broadcaster NRK. He said that a low-pressure system is moving in from the south that will bring lots of precipitation on Sunday.
Some of it might fall as rain, Fagerlid said, but snow is forecast at all elevations over 200 meters. Streets and highways are also likely to be slippery.
Studded tires can be used from November 1 in central and southern Norway. Residents of the northern counties of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark have been able to have studded tires on their cars since October 16.
