Norwegians go shopping again

Debit- and credit card use among Nordea bank customers in the first week of June was higher than it was before the crisis began in March. The Nordic banking group views the jump as a sign that Norwegians’ consumption continues to increase.

It’s another sign that the Norwegian company is recovering from the Corona crisis. Even though spending is usually lower in winter, newspaper Dagens Næringsliv (DN) reported that card use among Nordea customers has increased the most at restaurants.

Norway’s biggest bank, DNB, reports the same trend, while state statistics bureau SSB has also recorded a surge of consumption in April. Retail sales hit their highest level ever, driven by sales at sporting goods stores and building supply companies.

DN reported earlier this week that bicycle sales “exploded” during the height of the Corona crisis, when Norwegians were advised against using public transportation. Sporting goods chain XXL reported revenue growth of between 25- and 30 percent.
