Two military vehicles were involved in a head-on collision in Bardu, just north of Setermoen, on Tuesday afternoon. Two people were pinned inside a passenger car and seriously injured while those in a military truck escaped physical injury but were nonetheless sent to a local emergency clinic.
The collision forced closure of the E6 highway, creating a long back-up on the main road through the area. One of the military’s Bell helicopters and an air ambulance were sent to the scene of the accident, which local police described as “serious.” The two injured were flown to the University of Northern Norway’s hospital in Tromsø.
The accident marred the beginning of the large NATO winter exercises in the area called Joint Viking. Police think the driver of the military car tried to pass slower-moving vehicles on the two-lane highway, but then collided with the military truck in the oncoming lane.
