Heavy snow shut Bergen’s airport

Winter hasn’t released its grip on Norway, even though March is viewed as a springtime month. Sub-zero temperatures have been reported over most of the country this week, and a major snowstorm forced closure of Bergen’s main airport Flesland Wednesday afternoon.

Runways could no longer be used by 1:30pm and that affected all traffic to and from Bergen. The airport began to reopen shortly after 3pm but delays and cancellations were expected throughout the day.

Svalbard and the northern city of Tromsø were clobbered yet again by heavy snow this week, while the sun kept shining brightly over most of Southern Norway. It was unusually cold in Oslo and the surrounding area, though, with some predictions of snow on Thursday. Skiers, meanwhile, are enjoying one of the best winters in years, with thousands of kilometers of ski trails groomed and skiing conditions excellent.
