Dubious weather records set in August

Extremely wet weather in the south and unusually warm weather in the north contributed to scores of new precipitation and temperatures records in Norway last month. More are expected as climate change takes hold.

“All the rain, also (the extreme weather system) Hans has an element of climate change in it,” Anita Verpe Dyrrdal of the Norsk Klimaservicesenter told news bureau NTB. She warned of more extreme weather in Norway and the rest of the world.

The state meteorological institute, meanwhile, reports that more than 100 precipitation records and 50 warmth records were set in August. “It’s seldom that so many records are set as those in August,” said Jostein Mamen, a climate researcher at the institute. Several came from weather stations that have been in operation for more than 100 years.
