New car sales crash

Sales of new cars in Norway last month were down 50 percent from March of last year, sinking to their lowest level in 15 years.  Only 9,750 new cars were registered nationwide, down from around 19,000 in March 2023.

“New car sales, which often take the temperature of household economy in Norway, reflect the economic challenges many Norwegians are experiencing,” stated Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, director of the road traffic organization OFV, in a press release this week.

OFV reported that a total of 22,252 new cars have been registered so far this year, down 22 percent from the first quarter of 2023. Nearly 90 percent of the new cars registered were electric, reflecting proposals to halt sales of fossil-fueled cars in Norway by 2026.
