Tommy Urhaug from Hordaland now seems bound for Los Angeles in 2028, after winning Norway’s first gold medal at the Paralympics in Paris. He beat his rival from Taiwan in table tennis with his family and Crown Prince Haakon cheering in the background.
Urhaug already ranked as among the world’s best in Para Table Tennis and didn’t disappoint. It was his second Paralympics gold medal, 12 years since his first and 24 years after his Paralympics debut. Now, reports state broadcaster NRK, his wife insists he continue competing for another four years, with an aim to winning again at the Paralympics in Los Angeles. He’s won bronze earlier, and now she wants at least a silver medal to round out the collection.
“We really didn’t have much faith in winning gold,” he told NRK after the match. “Our goal was to make it to the semi-finals, I knew I was good enough for that. Now I’m incredibly relieved, and satisfied.”
Norway had won six medal as of Tuesday, two in silver and three in bronze. The silvers went to runner Salum Kashafali and rower Birgit Skarstein.
