Red alert warnings were issued by Norway’s state meteorologists on Thursday after more extreme weather slammed into the West Coast. Areas around Bergen and Voss were especially hard-hit as roads and railways were hit by flooding and landslides.
The main train line running between Oslo and Bergen was closed in at least two areas, and officials warned that the main E16 highway may close at nightfall. Railway operator Vy had already halted train service between Arna and Ål, and later between Voss and Bergen. The scenic trainline Flåmsbanen, which is especially popular with tourists, was also closed.
The military was called in to help with flooding, which was expected to peak during the night. Bergen has so far been hit with the most rain, with 106 millimeters since midnight Wednesday. Police warned residents against driving and urged people to stay home, where many already were trying to pump out water from flooded cellars. The counties of Møre og Romsdal and Rogaland were also severely affected by the storm but local officials claimed they had control and were accustomed to landslide danger.
