Oslo area residents have been warned to brace for major disruptions in the city’s tram and metro system next year. Upgrades and expansion of the entire system will initially necessitate closures of some lines and stations including Majorstuen, one of the system’s main hubs.
Bus service will replace some of the closed tram lines, but not all. The busy lines 2 and 3 will close between Majorstuen and Borgen on Oslo’s west side at the end of March, and won’t reopen until November.
The disruptions will lead to major improvements: Majorstuen station will be upgraded and the new, long-awaited tram line to Fornebu will finally be connected to the existing metro network. New signals and security improvements will also be implemented on all lines around the city.
“2025 will be a demanding year, with lots of disruption that will affect many of our passengers,” said Snorre Lægran, planning director for the entire Ruter transit system. The end result will hopefully make it worth all the hassles, and Ruter will expand its bus service in the meantime.
