Norway isn’t known for having earthquakes, but one centered off its west coast Sunday night was felt over a wide area from Ålesund south to Måløy and Førde, and even farther inland. A series of at least six aftershocks were also registered.
“They were so small that hardly anyone could feel them,” Mathilde Sørensen, seismology professor at the University of Bergen, told state broadcaster NRK. The main quake that registered 4.3 on the Richter scale hit just past 9pm Sunday night and she didn’t notice it in Bergen “until the telephone began to ring,” she laughed.
There were no reports of any damage from Sunday night’s quake, with an epicenter around 70 kilometers off the coast from Florø. The strongest earthquake ever registered in Norway was measured at 5.9 in 1819. Sørensen said quakes over 6 are possible in Norway, but ony with thousands of years between them.
