The more than 30,000 Norwegians who took part in a memorial march for murder victim Tamima Nibras Juhar over the weekend have brought attention back to terrorism motivated by racism. Police say Juhar’s assailant, now publicly identified as 18-year-old Djordje Wilms, also planned another attack, on a mosque in Hønefoss.
Wilms remains confined in isolation after brutally stabbing Juhar while she was working at the youth welfare institution in Oslo where he was living. Police have said that Wilms himself called his attack “politically motivated” because Juhar was a Muslim who had come to Norway fromo Ethiopia.
“We have come together by the thousands to reject hatred and racism,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre while addressing those assembled in downtown Oslo. Many raised yellow roses during a moment of silence because yellow was Juhar’s favorite colour. Several other flower tributes have been made to honour Juhar, along with demonstrations against racism, fear of foreigners and right-wing extremism.
