Electric cars take the lead

Norway has long provided lots of incentives to buy electric cars instead of those running on gasoline. Now, for the first time ever, there are more electric cars registered in the country than those needing fossil fuel.

Non-electric cars may become fossils themselves if the trend continues. Many of the incentives to buy electric vehicles, like much lower taxes and no obligation to pay tolls, have since disappeared, but more than 90 percent of all new cars purchased in Norway are still electric.

Norway also has no less that 177 types of electric vehicles registered, since so many different models are available on the market. The selection on offer is much greater than in most other European countries. Christina Bu, secretary general of Norway’s electric vehicle organization Norsk elbilforening, says that’s because of the country’s policies that have made electric cars much more competitive for consumers in Norway than in other countries. There also are lots of recharging stations around the country.

“We’re a market that always has attracted the newest electric car models, often before other countries,” Bu told state broadcaster NRK. The most popular models at present are the Tesla Model Y and the Volkswagen ID.4.
