Northern Norway’s highly popular Bodø/Glimt football team can be a sensation in the Champions League, according to one of the country’s foremost football commentators. In their first meeting last week with Champions League stalwart Tottenham, they held their own on home turf.
It was a culture clash of sorts, when Champions League officials arrived in the small northern city of Bodø and at Glimt’s also small and old-fashioned stadium called Aspmyra. The football officials had demanded all sorts of special treatment regarding parking and fashionable lounges but had to settle for what Bodø/Glimt can offer for now, until plans for a new stadium materialize.
Bodø/Glimt, meanwhile, avoided a loss after Jens Petter Hauge delivered two “dream goals” and held the lead until a highly unfortunate self-goal that resulted in a 2-2 tie. “The stadium and the city deserved a better result,” Hauge told news bureau NTB after the match, but he confirmed that the team had looked forward to the first Champions League match in Norway in many years, and more to come.
