A small town in Northern Norway was in mourning after five people were killed in a head-on collision south of Tromsø during the weekend. Three of them were 18-year-olds driving and riding in the same car and all were from Ramfjord, on their way home.
Police said the accident occurred just before midnight Saturday on the two-lane E8 highway at Hundbergan. They’re still investigating but believe the three young men were heading south when their car collided with a car heading north. There were also three people in that car, a man in his 60 and two women in their 50s, all from another small town in the area, Kaldfjord. The man and one of the women were also killed, while the other woman survived and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
Crisis teams were quickly set up to assist the victims’ family and friends. Tromsø also opened its Arctic Cathedral to offer a meeting place for mourners. Tromsø Mayor Gunnar Wilhelmsen called the accident “deeply tragic” and said it affected the entire region. It’s deemed the worst traffic accident in Tromsø since 2011, when five people were killed in a collision in Lavangsdalen.
“This is a large and tragic accident that directly affects many people,” the pastor at Tromsø’s cathedral, May Line Angell, told state broadcaster NRK. “Now we need to take care of all the families and support one another.”
