Norway’s national day celebrations on the 17th of May are meant to celebrate fellowship and democracy, but things went wrong from Tromsø in the north to Drøbak in the south after too much partying earlier in the day.
By Sunday evening, police had to break up brawls and call on parents to fetch their drunken offspring. Four teenagers were arrested in Tromsø after a brawl on the popular northern city’s main street, Storgata. At least 25 others were involved and one of them was hit in the head with an iron rod. Emergency health care workers were at the scene.
In Bergen, police reported several fights and disturbances of the peace by teenagers. One involved at least 20 youth inside a Burger King restaurant, while someone else sent fireworks into the crowds at the main city square Torgallmenningen. “Our overall request to parents is to talk to their teenagers and stay sober themselves,” police operations leader Tore-Andre Brakstad told state broadcaster NRK. “The police do not have capacity to drive drunken youth home.”
Police were also called on to break up street fights in Gjøvik, Oslo, Jessheim, Asker and Drøbak, where police also had to deal with intoxicated youth.
