A 14-year-old Norwegian boy has stolen a bus and set off alone on a long-distance trip for the third time in the past six months. Because he’s underage and can avoid criminal charges, though, he only faced another “serious conversation” with police and meetings with Norway’s child protection agency Barnevernet.
The teenager, whose identity was withheld, made headlines earlier this year when he stole a bus in a town just south of Oslo and drove it all the way to Gothenburg in Sweden. Police later discovered that he’d also stolen a bus in the West Coast city of Stavanger and drove around for nearly three hours through Sandnes and Ryfast before delivering it back.
On Sunday, when most of Norway was out celebrating the national 17th of May holiday, police in Kristiansand received a report that a very young bus driver was rolling around the southern coastal town of Grimstad. State broadcaster NRK reported that police finally managed to stop him quite a distance later, on the E39 highway west of Kristiansand, more than 300 kilometers from Oslo.
Police in Agder told NRK they “had control” of the boy, while those in his home district near Oslo said they once again “view this case very seriously, when a boy who’s so young steals a bus and drives it in the traffic system.” Bus company Unibuss confirmed it was one of its buses used in the public transport system but had no further comment.
