Norwegians have long led the world in replacing fossil-fuel vehicles with electric ones, and that’s having more consequences than just a decline in emissions. The numbers of petrol/gasoline stations are declining dramatically nationwide.
News service Nettavisen reports that 430 stations have shut down since 2020, raising predictions that Norway will only have 730 left by 2034. That’s down from 1,200 in 2012 and more than 4,000 in 1969.
Defense researchers worry that the decline in both fully serviced- and fuel stations can weaken preparedeness if it becomes difficult to obtain fuel. The rural-oriented Center Party is also concerned, because so many of its constituents live in outlying areas and still rely on their cars.
