Two young wolves believed to be looking for partners were observed Tuesday on either side of Oslo Fjord at Vestby and Hurumlandet. One resident saw a wolf under one of the apple trees in his garden, while the other wolf was seen swimming west over the nearby narrow portion of the fjord and going ashore near Åros.
State wildlife officials said the wolves can wander over long distances in the course of a day. Residents were urged to keep an eye on their own pets but reassured that wolves generally shy away from people.
Vestby resident Sebastian Lennox told news bureau NTB that he saw one of the wolves walk up his driveway and roam around his garden. “It was very quick on its feet and lively,” Lennox said. “I wasn’t afraid, but I think I’ll wait a bit before mowing the lawn.”
He added that he “hopes everything will go well for the wolf.” That’s not always the case, as when farmers fear wolves will attack free-grazing sheep. That often leads to the wolves being hunted down and shot despite protests from animal rights advocates and conservationists.
