Norwegian leaders joined others around the world on Sunday in condemning the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, during one of Trump’s campaign rallies to win back the US presidency. Trump isn’t popular among most Norwegians, but shooting at him was assailed as an attack on democracy.
Both Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and his foreign minister, Espen Barth Eide, were quick to express shock and condemnation at the assassination attempt. Støre called it an attack on democracy itself, and deplored such political violence.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian foreign minister, wrote on social media that he was “shocked by the attempted assassination” of Trump. “I wish him a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with those affected,” Stoltenberg wrote. “I condemn this attack. Political violence has no place in our democracies.”
Stoltenberg added that NATO allies, who met in Washington just last week, “stand together to defend our freedom and values.”
