A majority on the local council in Ås, south of Oslo, has voted in favour of a ban on begging in the town that’s home to one of Norway’s major universities. The controversial measure was backed by local politicians from the Conservative-, Center- and Progress parties plus INP, representing industrial and business interests.
State broadcaster NRK reported that the majority claimed begging is often tied to crime and can threaten security in the town. Opposition parties had objected mightily to the ban, and their criticism was fierce.
“It’s cynical and heartless to forbid people in need from asking for help,” said Magnus Dybdahl, leader of the local chapter of the Greens Party (MDG). He said he was also speaking on behalf of the Labour-, Liberal-, Socialist Left- and Reds parties, plus the small Partiet Sentrum.
