Storms and slides isolate thousands

Snow- and landslides crashed down on several roads around Northern Norway on Tuesday, cutting off small towns on Senja, at Hadsel in Vesterålen, around Tromsø and north of Alta. Residents were likely to remain isolated at least through mid-week.

More than 2,000 people couldn’t commute to work or school outside the small settlements that dot the northern counties of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark. In other cases, rough weather also halted ferry connections and several fishing villages were cut off.

State broadcaster NRK reported that residents seemed to be taking it in stride, with most able to get by for at least a week without running out of supplies. “Most everyone has freezers full of fish and meat, and everyone always has potatoes in the house,” Tor-Birger Brønnum in Sandland told NRK. “I don’t think anyone will really suffer for many days.”
