Trade Minister Cecilie Myrseth of the Labour Party has called in officials from Norway’s grocery business once again, after food prices jumped again in July. She wants an explanation for the price hikes, calling them “unacceptable.”
Leaders of the highly profitable NorgesGruppen, Reitan Retail (REMA) and Coop, plus grocery home delivery firm Oda have some questions to answer after Norway’s already-high prices for food and drinks rose another 4.4 percent just from June to July. They’re up 5.9 percent for the year, while prices of some grocery items rose in the double-digits.
Myrseth has also summoned leaders from dominant meat cooperative Nortura and Orkla, which produces a wide range of grocery items including food and other household products. She wants to know why some beef and lamb now costs as much as NOK 600 per kilo (USD 60) or more. Fruit and vegetables in season have also gone up, even though the entire grocery sector has been under heavy political pressure over rising prices for many years.
