Police districts all over Norway have been swamped with reports of drone sightings from north to south. They’ve investigated at least 39 reports of drones hovering over the country just in the past month.
Many of the sightings have occurred over or near airports, military installations and downtown areas, where drone flying is almost always illegal. On Thursday came news of drones even flying over the southern coastal town of Arendal, better known as a summer holiday destination than a drone target but also with industry that could be subject to sabotage.
Among the more serious sightings were those of a so-called “fixed wing drone” over Narvik, also a city and region of high strategic importance and where NATO troops can be received. Norwegian aviation authority Luftfartstilsynet reports nearly 500 drone sightings so far this year, adding that it’s difficult to say whether that reflects actual drones over Norway or increased public awareness of the problem.
