Bullying declines nationwide

The numbers of Norwegian children and youth who suffer bullying at school have declined, according to a new survey of 440,000 school students from the fifth grade through high school. More of them also say they’re motivated, enjoy school and get support from their teachers.

The survey, conducted by the state education directorate (Udir), showed that 5.5 percent of all those questioned have experienced bullying (called mobbing in Norwegian). That’s down from 6.3 percent last year and continues a decline that began after the pandemic in 2023.

Bullying seemed more common in higher grades, for example 11.3 percent among students in the 7th grade and 9.6 percent in the 10th, but those levels were also down from earlier years. Officials and student leaders themselves detect a “positive development” at Norwegian schools. “After many years of increases in bullying, we now see a clear decline at all levels,” Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun when the numbers were released Thursday morning.
