Holmenkollen Festival lacked crowds

Organizers of the annual World Cup skiing- and ski jumping events at Holmenkollen in Oslo weren’t plagued by intoxicated spectators this year, but faced another problem. There were so many vacant seats that ski jumping chief Jan Erik Aalbu is sounding the alarm.

“Seeing World Cup ski jumping at Holmenkollen with almost empty grandstands is painful,” Aalbu wrote on social media Monday. There was also plenty of room along the ski trails, even for the previously popular 50-kilometer race. Events over the Holmenkollen weekend used to attract more than 100,000 people. Not now.

Foggy weather didn’t help, but Aalbu is calling on sports officials to come up with a strategy to renew public interest in the annual festival. “If we don’t make some drastic changes, we risk losing World Cup ski jumping at Holmenkollen in Oslo,” Aalbu warned.
