A scheduled beach clean-up on the island of Mosken in the Norwegian municipality of Værøy yielded much more than trash just before the weekend. Beach cleaners found a dead body on Friday, and police were quickly summoned.
The island is located off the western end of the popular Lofoten archipelago but relatively far from the all the tourism that has gripped in the area in recent years. Police sent the body for autopsy to clarify the dead person’s identity and time of death.
It’s also possible the body washed up on the beach after earlier boat accidents or drownings. Asked whether anyone had been reported missing in the area, police officials told state broadcaster NRK that their investigation had just begun and checking reports of missing persons was part of their work ahead.
