Crown Prince Haakon and his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, had to postpone long-planned celebrations of their 25th wedding anniversary this week. Her recent lung transplant along with King Harald’s current hospitalization forced cancellation of various events.
Mette-Marit, who’s also been involved in the scandal around the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and has a son in police custody, married Norway’s crown prince on August 25, 2001 in front of 800 guests in the Oslo cathedral. They then set off on a lengthy honeymoon, which was itself marred when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York on September 11 that year.
They’ve since had two more children together and claimed to look forward to celebrate their silver anniversary “when her health allows it,” according to a statement from the Royal Palace. They reportedly celebrated privately on Tuesday after the crown prince had visited his 89-year-old father at the national hospital (Rikshospitalet) in Oslo. The king’s condition was described as “stable” while he receives treatment for an infection and anemia.
